The 2008 Kentucky Derby brought the issue of fatal horse breakdowns to millions of viewers when the second-place filly Eight Belles was injured and had to be euthanized shortly after finishing the race. The question now facing the racing industry is whether safety reforms needed to protect horses and riders will finally be implemented.
In an essay broadcast on WYPR, the National Public Radio station in Baltimore, I examined the issue of horse breakdowns and offer a few reforms that might help to protect man and aminal.

Greetings and welcome to my blog at the Shepard Strategic Communications web site.
I’m going to keep this short and sweet.
My hope is that this missive will grow into a place where interesting articles and thoughts on a wide range of topics are shared.
My new business, Shepard Strategic Communications, is devoted to providing strategic communications and news media outreach for individuals and non profit groups. And I expect topics like race relations, gender equity, national politics and the world of philanthropy will get most of my attention. But nothing will be taboo.
One thing you may see in other blogs but won’t read here is me blathering on about about dumb stuff like American Idol, what I ate for breakfast or my difficult commute downtown. I really hate that crap.
I’m a little old fashioned. I want to get my clients in the news media spotlight. And I am more than happy to work in the background to make that happen.
Thanks and take care,
Paul Shepard
P.S. My only indulgence on the personal tip may be an occasional report on my first love, my race horses. They are 5 year-old gelding Cayman Condo and 3 year-old filly Invincible Style. Both will be running at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore this spring and my partners in the Winners Circle Partners III ownership group are looking forward to their next appearance.
I will be putting up pictures of Condo and Style soon – hopefully from the winner’s circle.
